The Swiss Association for Tobacco Prevention is demanding heavy fines to crack down on unauthorized smoking and vaping at train stations across Switzerland. Driven by passenger complaints about e-cigarette vapor in crowds, the group urges railway authorities to impose 500 CHF penalties to enforce designated smoking zones.
Currently, smoking and vaping are strictly limited to a two-meter radius around marked ashtrays on Swiss train platforms. However, compliance remains a significant issue, particularly among e-cigarette users.
According to the association, many vapers release vapor directly into crowds, operating under the misconception that e-cigarette emissions are less bothersome and therefore acceptable anywhere. This behavior has prompted regular complaints regarding vaping on platforms and even inside train carriages.
Luciano Ruggia, director of the prevention association, stated that a 500 CHF fine is “reasonable and justified” to ensure the rules are respected. He also highlighted the need for clearer infrastructure to guide passengers.
To improve compliance, the association proposes the following measures:
- Ground Markings: Clearly painted lines to delineate permitted smoking and vaping zones.
- Updated Signage: Revising current no-smoking signs, which only depict traditional combustible cigarettes, to explicitly include vaping devices.
Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) maintains a different perspective on the severity of the issue. SBB spokesperson Moritz Weisskopf told local media that the vast majority of passengers follow the rules, noting that the railway operator receives only three to four national complaints per week regarding station smoking.
While SBB does not currently issue formal fines for vaping or smoking violations, offenders can still face consequences. These include removal from station premises, potential legal proceedings, or administrative fees starting at 25 CHF. SBB also stated that the traditional cigarette symbol on current signage universally represents all tobacco and nicotine products, including vapes.
