Local authorities across the Venetian coast have launched a zero-tolerance crackdown on smoking and vaping on the sand this summer. Driven by a push for cleaner nature and public health, the strict regulations directly subject tourists to fines of up to €500 for using cigarettes or e-cigarettes under their beach umbrellas.
The new rules stretch from Bibione to Chioggia, though the severity of enforcement varies by municipality. Lifeguards and local police are actively patrolling to ensure compliance throughout the day.
In Bibione, which has pioneered smoke-free beaches for nearly a decade, the municipality has extended the ban this year until September 27. Officials confirmed there are absolutely no exceptions for e-cigarettes, noting that vape clouds massively disturb neighboring tourists. Violators face maximum penalties of €500 and must use designated ashtray zones located at the beach entrances.
Jesolo has also ended its trial phase and instituted a complete ban across its entire sandy area. The beach is now divided into 16 sections with clear rules: smoking and vaping are strictly taboo on towels or under umbrellas, and are only permitted on the promenade behind the beach or in specially equipped “smoking islands.”
While Bibione and Jesolo take a hardline approach, other coastal towns are adopting varied strategies for the summer season.
| Municipality | Ban Status | Key Regulations |
|---|---|---|
| Bibione | Strict Ban | Covers vapes and cigarettes. Fines up to €500. Smoking only at entrances. |
| Jesolo | Strict Ban | Total ban on the sand. Permitted only on promenades or designated islands. |
| Chioggia (Sottomarina) | Strict Ban | In place for 6 years. Covers water, loungers, and showers. |
| Eraclea Mare | Partial Ban | Smoking banned directly at the waterline. No total beach ban yet. |
| Cavallino Treporti | Operator Discretion | Individual beach operators set their own rules. Future regional regulation planned. |
| Caorle | Recommendation | No strict ban. Signs strongly urge smokers to leave the sand out of respect. |
Pioneering areas like Sottomarina and Isola Verde in Chioggia have already enforced these rules for six years, restricting smoking to clearly marked service zones. Meanwhile, towns like Caorle are currently relying on the common sense of vacationers, issuing strong recommendations rather than outright fines.
