A new Appinio study reveals a generational shift in Spain’s nicotine habits, with youth driving a 41% vape purchasing rate.
Spanish smokers, vaping in Spain

Market research platform Appinio has reported a major shift in Spanish smoking habits, revealing that 45% of traditional smokers are actively contemplating a transition to e-cigarettes. Released ahead of World No Tobacco Day, the study highlights a growing generational divide in nicotine consumption across the country.

While traditional cigarettes still dominate the market, alternative products are gaining rapid traction. Currently, 76% of smokers continue to buy classic cigarettes, but 41% of Spaniards are now purchasing vapes.

When asked about their motivations for considering alternatives, 42% of respondents highlighted the lack of lingering odors as a primary benefit of e-cigarettes. Furthermore, 41% perceive vaping as a less harmful option compared to traditional smoking.

Despite the high prevalence of smoking—with 32% consuming 5 to 10 cigarettes daily—the desire to quit is widespread. The data shows that 86% of smokers have considered quitting, and 20% occasionally use nicotine patches to manage cravings.

The study also emphasizes that tobacco use remains heavily tied to social and recreational activities for occasional consumers. The primary triggers for smoking include:

  • Parties and Events: 53% (Notably higher among women at 58%, compared to 33% of men).
  • Drinking Alcohol: 32%.
  • Weekends: 30%.

Health advocates remain concerned about early initiation rates. Alarmingly, 43% of respondents started smoking between 16 and 17 years old, and 26% began between 12 and 15. However, the study notes a positive trend: the youngest demographic (16-24) shows increasing awareness of the risks and less interest in trying combustible tobacco.
