Burkhard Blienert, Germany’s Commissioner for Addiction and Drug Issues, has called for a strict ban on flavored e-cigarettes and tobacco advertising. This push comes amid growing concerns that cheap, brightly colored disposable vapes with sweet flavors are aggressively targeting teenagers across the country.
Blienert criticized the ubiquitous presence of vape shops, comparing their vibrant marketing to selling candy. He also condemned online retailers for offering deep discounts to attract young, first-time buyers.
To combat this trend, Blienert signaled that the government’s next step is to completely ban tobacco and vape advertising, as well as industry sponsorships. The tobacco industry currently spends an estimated €250 million annually on these activities, a figure Blienert aims to reduce to zero.
Beyond flavors and marketing, German authorities are targeting the devices themselves:
- Age Restrictions: While legally restricted to adults, youth vaping rates continue to rise in Germany.
- Environmental Impact: The German Bundesrat recently supported a motion urging the EU to ban disposable vapes entirely, classifying them as hazardous e-waste.
Interestingly, while pushing for stricter vaping regulations, Blienert has simultaneously championed the legalization of small amounts of cannabis in Germany, provided its advertising remains strictly prohibited.
