Irish lawmakers are considering a lifetime ban on the sale of cigarettes and nicotine products, following the legislative framework established by the UK. Fianna Fáil TD Malcolm Byrne has published the Public Health (Tobacco) (Amendment) (Smokefree Generation) Bill, which is scheduled for introduction when the Dáil returns.
The proposed Irish bill aligns with the UK’s Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026, which outlaws tobacco sales to anyone born after January 1, 2009. Commenting on the UK law, former Health Secretary Wes Streeting stated: “By ending the cycle of tobacco addiction for future generations, we are taking one of the boldest steps in decades to prevent illness before it even begins.”
The Irish Heart Foundation (IHF) has expressed strong support for the initiative. Mark Murphy, advocacy director for the IHF, noted the organization would “very much welcome any Government or backbencher bill that would bring in a smoke-free generation as per the UK.”
While Ireland currently plans to raise the legal smoking age from 18 to 21 in 2028, the new bill would transition the country toward a permanent, generational ban rather than a simple age increase.
