Turkey tobacco ban, youth smoking Turkey

Turkish Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu announced plans to block tobacco access for individuals under 18 through mandatory age verification. Framing the initiative around the societal burden of smoking, Memişoğlu described youth tobacco use as “preventable destruction” and confirmed that draft legislation is underway to strictly enforce the existing ban on sales to minors.

Integrating Age Verification with Data Privacy

Under the proposed framework, tobacco purchases will require age validation linked to Turkish national identity data. Addressing public concerns regarding surveillance, Memişoğlu reassured consumers that personal records will remain secure.

“Our citizens should rest assured,” Memişoğlu said. “We are evaluating all options that respect privacy,” noting that officials are testing practical and electronic models to balance compliance with data protection.

Restricting Tobacco Visibility in Public Areas

The Ministry of Health also plans to curb tobacco visibility in open recreational zones, including parks and gardens. Authorities will increase inspections across retail points to ensure age checks are carried out consistently.

Memişoğlu stressed that eliminating youth tobacco access requires collective public responsibility to secure cleaner air and a healthier population.
