Hookahs and E-Cigarettes Surpass Traditional Tobacco Among Spanish Youth

Health officials warn of multiplied risks and aggressive marketing as vaping and water pipes become the dominant choice for teenagers.
Spanish youth vaping, hookahs vs traditional tobacco

The National Committee for the Prevention of Smoking (CNPT) has warned that hookahs and e-cigarettes are officially displacing traditional tobacco among Spanish youth. Driven by aggressive marketing campaigns targeting minors, this shift has led to alarming usage rates and a significant drop in the age of smoking initiation across the country.

According to the latest data from Spain’s National Plan on Drugs, 40% of adolescents between 14 and 18 years old report having used a hookah in the last month. While regional variations exist—for instance, the Region of Murcia reports a slightly lower daily smoking rate (18.7%) compared to the national average (21%) for this demographic—the overarching trend toward alternative devices is undeniable.

Adelaida Lozano Polo, a CNPT specialist and delegate in Murcia, highlighted a deeply concerning drop in the age of initiation. Current data shows that 9.5% of students aged 12 and 13 admit to having used water pipes, with e-cigarette usage being recorded in children as young as 11.

Health specialists attribute this surge to the tobacco industry’s strategic pivot. Facing declining traditional cigarette sales, the industry has heavily promoted heated tobacco products and e-cigarettes. These campaigns utilize bright colors, appealing flavors, and social media influencers to capture a younger demographic, effectively “whitewashing” the dangers of nicotine consumption.

Contrary to the perception that these alternative devices are safer, health experts warn that they actually multiply health risks. Dr. Vidal Barchilán, vice president of the CNPT, noted that over 60% of youth cases result in dual use—consuming both e-cigarettes and combustible tobacco.

The risks associated with hookahs (also known as shishas or water pipes) are particularly severe due to the lack of a filter, allowing synthetic aromas and toxic compounds to enter the lungs directly.

StagBar Nexus 60K Disposable Vape

The Stagbar Nexus 60,000 is a premium, high-capacity disposable vape built for endurance and flavor depth. Powered by a rechargeable 850mAh battery, it offers a massive 60,000 puff lifespan with a wide selection of rich, vibrant flavors.

At the retail level, the shift in consumer behavior is highly visible. Darío Moreno, a tobacconist in Murcia, noted that while the initial “boom” of hookahs was massive, e-cigarettes have now overtaken them in daily sales. Hookah setups, ranging from €30 to €500 depending on materials, primarily attract non-traditional smokers drawn to flavored, non-combustible options.

Moreno also observed a transition in the e-cigarette market, with consumers moving away from disposable vapes toward rechargeable pod systems. Devices offering up to 600 puffs typically contain nicotine, while larger capacity devices are sold nicotine-free.

In response to this growing public health crisis, the CNPT—backed by scientific societies, hospital chiefs, and public health officials—has issued a manifesto demanding immediate legislative action. Their proposed regulations include:

  • Implementing stricter overall regulations on all new tobacco and vaping products.
  • Increasing taxation on e-cigarettes and hookah products.
  • Mandating neutral, plain packaging to reduce visual appeal.
  • Enforcing an absolute ban on product displays and advertising at points of sale.
  • Expanding designated smoke-free and vape-free public spaces.
