Following a Federal Supreme Court decision, Swiss cantons are advancing legislative efforts to outlaw disposable e-cigarettes. Lucerne and Ticino are the latest jurisdictions to push for regional prohibitions, adding momentum to local tobacco control policies across Switzerland.
Lucerne and Ticino Advance New Prohibitions
In Lucerne, lawmakers submitted a formal motion to the Cantonal Council on September 7, 2026, seeking to introduce a complete ban on single-use devices. On September 9, 2026, the Ticino cantonal government accepted a 2024 motion, confirming plans to present a draft amendment to its cantonal health law before the end of the year.
To date, Valais and Geneva are the only cantons that have enacted total sales bans on disposable electronic cigarettes. However, the recent judicial backing from the Federal Supreme Court has prompted other regional authorities to act.
Growing Cantonal Support Across Switzerland
The regulatory shift is expanding across several other Swiss regions:
- Fribourg: The Council of State has launched a public consultation on a draft law to ban disposable vapes.
- Approved Motions: Parliaments in Basel-City, Bern, Jura, Neuchâtel, Solothurn, Thurgau, and Vaud have passed motions directing their executive bodies to draft similar restrictions.
