Austria vape ban, disposable e-cigarettes Austria

Austria’s parliamentary health committee has approved a crucial amendment to the Tobacco and Non-Smoker Protection Act, setting the stage to completely ban disposable e-cigarettes from the market by early 2027. This legislative milestone aligns Austria with a rapidly growing European movement targeting the environmental and health impacts of single-use vaping products.

The proposed ban addresses critical safety and ecological concerns. Disposable vapes, which contain built-in lithium-ion batteries, are frequently discarded in household trash rather than dedicated recycling centers. The Association of Austrian Waste Management Companies (VOEB), which welcomes the ban, has warned that these batteries pose an “existential threat” to waste facilities, frequently sparking dangerous fires when crushed in garbage trucks or sorting plants. Furthermore, improper disposal leads to the permanent loss of valuable finite resources, including lithium, cobalt, nickel, and lead.

Public sentiment in Austria heavily favors the restriction. A survey commissioned by the VOEB revealed that three out of four Austrians support a ban on environmental grounds.

To become law, the amendment must still clear the National Council and the Federal Council before its official publication in the Federal Law Gazette. Once finalized, Austria will join European neighbors like Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom, which have already moved to outlaw disposable vapes, while Germany actively prepares similar restrictive measures.
