Veneto regional authorities have launched a sweeping ban on beach smoking and vaping ahead of the Summer 2026 tourist season. This environmental and public health initiative, spanning several major Italian coastal resorts, will penalize violators with administrative fines of up to €50.
In Jesolo, the ban now covers the entire stretch of sand, expanding on 2025’s shoreline-only restriction. Mayor Christopher DeZotti noted the transition was gradual but necessary. Meanwhile, Bibione—a pioneer in smoke-free beaches since 2011—has officially banned electronic cigarettes and vapes along its entire nine-kilometer coastline, permitting use only in 40 designated areas.
Other Venetian destinations are rapidly adopting similar measures:
- Eraclea Mare: Introduced beach-wide smoking bans starting this season.
- Sottomarina & Green Island: Maintaining complete smoke-free policies established six years ago.
- Caorle: Currently bans smoking near the shoreline, with plans for expansion.
- Cavallino-Treporti: Remains the only major outdoor tourism destination in the region without active restrictions.
Local authorities justify the crackdown by citing scientific studies showing that secondhand smoke under beach umbrellas causes significant air pollution. Additionally, the ban aims to stop millions of plastic-heavy cigarette butts from being discarded in the sand, reducing rising coastal cleanup costs.
