A national survey has exposed a severe vaping epidemic in Polish schools, revealing that 78.1% of student nicotine users regularly use e-cigarettes. This crisis, fueled by sweet-flavored disposable devices, has prompted medical experts to demand immediate legislative bans as government promises of action continue to stall.
The study, conducted by IQS Think Forward for the Institute of Health and Democracy, highlights a massive shift in how Polish youth encounter nicotine. E-cigarettes have officially replaced traditional cigarettes as the primary gateway to addiction, with 57.78% of surveyed youth starting their nicotine journey with vapes.
To illustrate the dominance of e-cigarettes over other nicotine delivery systems among Polish students, the survey outlines stark contrasts in usage and initiation patterns:
| Product Type | Regular Student Usage Rate | Nicotine Initiation Share |
|---|---|---|
| E-cigarettes (Vapes) | 78.1% | 57.78% |
| Traditional Cigarettes | 24.0% | 40.95% |
| Heated Tobacco Products | 7.4% | 0.89% |
The appeal of these devices relies heavily on sensory marketing. Among youth who initiated nicotine use before age 15, 66.7% cited appealing flavors as their primary motivation, while 50.2% wanted to try something new. Psychiatrist Dr. Piotr Wierzbiński warned that sweet flavors and pleasant aromas chemically reinforce nicotine addiction by directly stimulating the brain’s reward center.
Despite Health Minister Izabela Leszczyna acknowledging disposable vapes as a “plague” among minors, legislative progress has been slow. The Ministry of Health originally promised a complete ban on disposable e-cigarettes before the summer holidays—the peak sales season—but has since pushed the target date back to autumn.
Medical experts, including cardiologist Prof. Krzysztof J. Filipiak, have criticized this delay. He noted that while countries like the UK, France, and Belgium have seen decisive, top-down political action to outlaw disposables, Poland remains silent. Currently, the market is flooded with cheap, Chinese-imported disposable vapes, with sales skyrocketing by over 200% year-on-year.
