The Galician government has announced its intention to legally regulate the use of vapes, positioning itself as the first Spanish region to tackle the youth vaping crisis. This legislative move aims to block minors from accessing devices that experts warn are gateways to severe addiction.
Currently, flavored vapes are easily accessible in shopping centers, pharmacies, and bars across Spain. While the sale of nicotine vapes to minors is prohibited, the industry exploits a legal loophole by aggressively marketing zero-nicotine devices to teenagers.
Manuel Isorna, a drug addiction expert and professor at UVigo, strongly supports the upcoming Galician legislation. He emphasizes that a legal framework is essential to force state security forces to monitor consumption and build a critical barrier against youth access.
The proposed regulations aim to address several alarming tactics and health risks associated with the vaping industry:
- Deceptive Marketing: The industry uses pleasant flavors and bright colors to attract minors, simulating the act of smoking and normalizing the behavior.
- Chemical Inhalation: Users are inhaling 100% chemical products, including flavorings and sweeteners, heated to 400 degrees Celsius.
- Dangerous Additives: To prevent the vape liquids from freezing at extreme temperatures, manufacturers use chemicals belonging to the same family as car antifreeze.
Isorna warns that the tobacco industry is using e-cigarettes as a strategic investment to capture a new generation of consumers. By convincing the public that vaping is a “harm reduction” tool, they retain existing smokers while hooking young people whose nervous systems are still developing.
This strategy has proven incredibly lucrative. According to tobacco market data, industry revenue in Spain has skyrocketed from half a million euros in 2016 to nearly 5 million euros today. This exponential tenfold increase in just six years is directly attributed to the explosion of the vape market.
By moving to legislate and restrict these devices, Galicia is taking a critical first step in dismantling the industry’s influence over minors and prioritizing public health over corporate profits.
