Vaping Calories Are Negligible and Bypass Digestion, Health Experts Confirm

Health experts explain why vaping calories are negligible and bypass the digestive system.
calories in vaping, do vapes have calories

Health experts have clarified the caloric impact of vaping, confirming that e-liquids present no threat to weight loss or muscle-building regimens. The explanation arrives as daily vaping rates reach 10 percent among UK adults, prompting questions regarding how inhaled aerosols affect the body’s daily energy balance.

How Many Calories Are in a Vape Puff?

BBC Health Correspondent Dominic Hughes explained that a single puff of a vape uses about 0.05 ml of e-liquid. This minute volume equates to “less than one quarter of a theoretical calorie,” making the physical act of vaping calorie-neutral.

“You probably use that much energy just thinking about whether to vape or not,” Hughes noted, adding that the brain and physical movements of inhaling burn more energy than the e-liquid contains.

Crucially, the body cannot absorb calories through the lungs. Because inhaled vapor bypasses the digestive tract, any sweeteners or ingredients present in the e-liquid are not processed by the stomach or converted into body fat. Sweeteners used in vapes do not contain actual sugar, further preventing caloric intake.

Vaping vs. Smoking: Toxin Exposure and Health Risks

While vaping is not entirely risk-free, the NHS advises that switching to nicotine vapes reduces exposure to toxins that cause cancer, lung disease, and cardiovascular issues. Traditional cigarettes contain around 7000 toxic chemicals, including tar, which cause the vast majority of smoking-related illnesses.

“People who vape are exposed to fewer toxins and they are present at lower levels than smoking cigarettes,” Hughes stated. The transition to vaping remains one of the most common tools for smokers attempting to quit in the UK.

UK Bans Disposable Vapes Under New Legislation

To prevent youth nicotine addiction, the UK government enacted the Tobacco and Vapes Bill in April 2026, which banned the sale of all disposable vapes. The legal age to purchase any vaping product remains 18.

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, described the legislation as a turning point. “By ending the cycle of tobacco addiction for future generations, we are taking one of the boldest steps in decades to prevent illness before it even begins,” Streeting said, emphasizing the goal to protect young people while supporting current smokers in quitting.
