Researchers from New Zealand and Indonesia have published a compelling opinion piece in Nature Health, asserting that e-cigarettes can play a pivotal role in reducing global tobacco consumption. This call to action urges public health policies to shift their primary focus toward eliminating combustible cigarettes rather than restricting significantly less harmful alternatives.

The authors highlight New Zealand as a primary success story. Following the widespread adoption of vaping devices starting in 2018, the country experienced a rapid decline in smoking rates, particularly among vulnerable communities. Currently, New Zealand’s adult smoking rate has plummeted to under 7%, while youth smoking has reached historic lows.

Robert Beaglehole of the University of Auckland summarized the harm-reduction philosophy, stating, “People smoke for the nicotine, but die due to the toxins present in tobacco smoke.” He emphasized that non-combustible products drastically reduce the health risks associated with nicotine consumption.

While acknowledging that e-cigarettes are not entirely risk-free and require appropriate regulation, the experts argue they are substantially less harmful than traditional tobacco. Furthermore, the authors warned against persistent public misperceptions regarding vaping risks, noting that these are often fueled by laboratory studies that fail to replicate real-world usage conditions.

Ultimately, the researchers conclude that adopting integrated strategies that include alternative nicotine products, backed by clear public information campaigns, could rapidly accelerate the decline of smoking worldwide.
